This photo shoot jumped up and grabbed my colour hungry eyes.

Rooikop (literally translated "redhead") collects discarded plastic shopping bags from the local landfill. This Eco-design company with a range of quirky fashion accessory, gifting – and interior products, clean, sort, cut, press, and stitch, and Voila - they have manufactured their own material from 100% waste materials. Each bag contains at least 16 plastic shopping bags and is hand crafted South African.

Twenty-two years ago a film about time travel gave us a glimpse of the now not-too-distant future. The 1989 Back to the Future sequel looked forward to 2015, capturing the imaginations of kids who dreamed of one day riding their own hover board in self-lacing sneakers like Marty McFly. 

For the launch of the Nike MAG and the ‘Back For The Future’ episode, Nike commissioned four artists to create original movie posters. Brent Rollins, Kate Gibb, La Boca and Will Sweeny each provided a poster for the series.

This is one of the best public displays I've ever seen. So with the countdown to the 17th UN Climate Change Conference being held in Durban - KwaZulu-Natal, I wondered how Durban creatives could demonstrate and highlight that the consequences of the rapid retreat of ice will not only affect the Artic region but the planet as a whole. How can we show that climate change concerns must be the political priority for the coming months?

Berlin, Germany:  1,000 ice sculptures melted under the Berlin sun as symbols of the effects of climate change, drawing attention to a new WWF report on risks of Arctic warming.

We're not normally into anything that leans to the "crafty" side here on nudge it network, but this funky idea caught my eye. Plus you get to tidy up your cupboard and do some recycling at the same time.  

Get crafty with those old vinyls! If you fancy this idea, here's what you'll need ...
Old vinyl from bottom of a cupboard, or a thrift shop (SPCA has piles in their thrift shop!),
a creative design in mind,
a sharp tool to carefully scratch your design into your vinyl,
a Dremel MultiTool and a high speed cutting bit,
an emery board (padded nail file) to clean off and neaten up the edges,
A clock mechanism(but only if you are making a clock of course).

and you're ready to hang.

Nando’s at Kings Cross in London

I love everything about this. The Nando’s at Kings Cross in London is not only, one of the best fast food concepts to emerge from South Africa, but also is the home of a gorgeous mosaic artwork by Clive van den Berg. The large-scale mosaic was designed by Van den Berg and created by top art students from the Spier Art Academy. "Coming To The City" is the latest of a range of South African artworks that can be found in each of the 243 Nando’s restaurants in the UK, effectively transforming the eating space into a gallery of South African art. So time you're in the UK, be sure to feed your tummy and your eyes on a bit of South Africa.

 Its awesome and innovative. A must see in New York. A very unique and unusual park designed by new york-based practices james corner field operations and diller scofidio + renfro has really grabbed my attention. The one mile long urban park is recycled from the former elevated freight railroad spur and runs from gansevvort street in the meatpacking district to west 34th street, between 10th and 11th avenues. It's amazing what can be done when﻿ we put our minds to it!!!

This stylish range of items for was created for The Design Museum. Aimed at the younger visitor to the museum the range consists of Notebooks, Pen, Pencil, Rulers, Eraser, Sharpener & Tote-Bags. All are carefully considered to have minimum impact- the bags are fully certified organic, including the printing, the rulers are recycled CD cases, the pens are biodegradable. I LOVE the wooden pencil sharpener and the less is more approach of the design as a whole. This kit is on my wish list.

Aram Lello’s Community Bench is an easily adjustable and multi-functional bench that works to encourage social interactions. The design is such that the material options extend to wood, plastic and aluminium.
The Community Bench was Lello’s entry into the Western Cape Furniture Initiative’s Shack Chic seating design competition which called on designers to create seating options prioritising comfort and practicality. Lello’s design, along with the other finalists, were first seen at Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town earlier this year.

The exhibit moves beyond static mannequins, instead creating a dynamic atmosphere. Curated by the Costume Institute’s Andrew Bolton, the Savage Beauty exhibit is a treat for McQueen fans. What a thrill it must be to see these pieces in real-life.

I love these creations from Umcebo design. Their recently launched range of chandeliers were so well received at the Design Indaba Expo, that they returned to Durban wish only one product left. The Killing Moon Collection represents the organisation's efforts in working with community crafters, helping them to develop as designers and producers. Hand-crafted to order. Each chandelier contains intricate beadwork containing floral references and also a bead and wire "animal guardian" referencing African ancestral beliefs that visiting animals are the manifestation of ancestors and offer protection to their recipients.
From a German luxury goods supplier to an exclusive deal with a Dutch Gallery and re-orders from a prominent South African furniture store, the interest in Umcebo’s creations at Design Indaba Expo was very positive.

Today is National Cleavage day here in South Africa. A day designed to promote breast cancer awareness. Here are a few "supporting" facts;

90% of Western women wear bras.
The average woman today owns six bras.
Since the late 19th century, the bra has replaced the corset in women's lingerie.
It's functionality as breast support has been subjected to fashion and bras are always changing design and shapes.

So just for fun, here are a few other uses for the bra. Can you think of any other creative uses for (an empty) bra?

The theme of Design Indaba 2011 was 'what will creativity hold for the future?' Among the internationals 

was one of my favourite designers, the very talented graphic designer Richard Hart co-founder of Disturbance Studio based in Durban, South Africa.

Among discussing a number of creative projects Richard also shared a few personal projects the studio has completed over the years including 'them and us' which disturbance curated in collaboration with amnesty international. The initiative aimed at bringing together 20 European and 20 African creative from the disciplines of visual arts, design, illustration and photography as a means of exploring the similarities and differences between 'first and third world views and aesthetics' based on a number of sub-themes, by pairing up one artist from Europe with one artist from Africa. 

The group was assigned two prescribed colours - blue and yellow for those of European descent  and red and green for those of African descent - each individually developing one poster revolving around  the subject of tolerance (or intolerance). the result is 20 double-sided posters - one side representing the 

European perspective while the other side displays the theme as interpreted by the African artists -  which though distinctly products of their makers, speak to one another about sub-themes such as: 

'big-and-small', 'buy-and-sell', 'clean-and-dirty', 'here-and-there', 'in-and-out', 'laugh-and-cry' etc.

These Afro Chic Trophy Heads are on display at this years Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town. The 3d sculptured heads are available in leather or recycled cardboard, and I for one would rather have a piece of sculptured art on my wall than a dead animal. South African designer  Joanna Orr has created an ironic twist on the animal trophies we as South Africans love, or hate.

Showcasing Style Design College Durban campus photography student Travis Cottrell.

A soccer match between the Keizer Chiefs and the Golden Arrows was not only my first time inside the Moses Mabhida Stadium but also a completely new experience for me! I have never been a huge fan of sports photography, but after the game my attitude towards it has definitely changed. The combination of the vuvuzela hum and the excitement the crowd creates really gets your adrenalin pumping. What an awesome festive atmosphere to be in. I had a great time moving around the seats photographing the crowds. It was challenging, as it was the first event of this kind that I had shot, but the experience I gained was well worth it! If you have never been to one of these matches I'd definitely recommend you go!

Q & A time with Travis 

Who or what inspired your passion for photography?

It runs in the family. From a young age I was playing around   with my parents camera's, but the day I picked up a book by Obie Oberholzer I was sold.

How would you describe your style?

I wouldn't say I have particular style, to me photography is about capturing a mood in a unique and interesting way, but I am definitely most influenced by journalistic photographers, most recently Joel Grimes!

If you could take a photographic roadtrip anywhere in the world for 30 days with money not being a consideration, where would you go? 

It would be a tie between somewhere like Namibia and Jamaica.

Things you cannot live without:

My newly acquired Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, 2 minute noodles and of course my beautiful Canon 7D.

If you had to describe your art as a fruit, what fruit would you choose and why?

It would probably be a fruit cocktail, because my ideas are constantly changing.

Men's Winter Trend 2011- Jackets Take Flight!

This has got to be one of the best trends in menswear on it's way for winter. The top designers took to the skies for the Fall/Winter 2010-11 season, with nearly every collection shown in Milan sending some version of a flight jacket down the runway. The style evokes a certain nostalgia for WWII-era heroism (like the 1940′s tail gunner) or for Tom Cruise’s glory years (think “Top Gun”).

Jodi Bieber a South African Photographer win prestigious award

Jodi Bieber a South African Photographer, has won the 2011 World Press Photo Awards, the World Press Photo of the year.

Above: Aisha’s father murdered two men in rural Afghanistan. In return for his punishment he gave away his two daughters for marriage. Aisha was abused by her husband and in-laws so she ran away to the neighbour. The neighbours called the police and the police arrested Aisha. She went to Kandahar prison. She was pardoned and her father then returned her to her husband. The Taliban village jury then decided as punishement to cut off Ashia’s ears and nose. She was left to bleed to death. Aisha is now in the USA to undergo reconstructive surgery on her nose and ears at the Grossman Burns Foundation. Jodi Bieber has previously won eight World Press Photo awards and is only the second South African photographer to win the highest honor in the contest. She is a former participant of the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass where she returned as a master in 2010. Bieber is represented by Institute for Artist Management and South Africa’s Goodman Gallery.

Here's a colour chart to keep handy when planing your autumn/winter women's and men's collections this year. So Deep Teal, Quarry, and Cedar appear to be high up on the trendy colour wheel this year. Personally, I like the look and sound of Coffee Liqueur and Nougat... what yummy colours. Pantone, the colour people, have unveiled the most popular colour used in fall collections.

Tea Time

Anyone who has ever been in one of my classes will remember me assessing their designs/images with my "tea or cappuccino" rating. Well here is a Tea package design that gets a cappuccino rating from me.

The package design for this tea in a can has a groovy pop-art Afo feel.

Produced in Woodstock, Cape Town, BOS Iced Tea is a new refreshingly local offering, that uses organic rooibos blended with natural fruit flavours and herbs. It’s produced with environmental integrity in mind and hopes to promote the health benefits of this beverage.

I just had to rush back to my laptop and share this visual feast. Maybe I'll ask my hubby if he wouldn't mind if I frame one of these photos for next to my bed. Alternately, I'm not too grown up for pin-ups on my bedroom wall am I?

Miuccia Prada hand picked three talented illustrators: Ivo Bisignano, Marcela Gutierrez, and Andrea Tarella, who have perfected the mood through the medium of watercolors, pastels and acrylics. The Rococo sunglasses, presented recently at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, and only 500 pieces will be available in Prada boutiques and selected stores.

With the Fall and Winter seasons on the horizon, the dark and gloomy days are unfortunately approaching. But fear not fellow stylish peeps - Spring 2011 is not too far away and in the mean time the fashion finds for the coming season are quite extraordinary and simply just too cool! Anything goes this winter from preppy all in white's and pastel blues to super patterned-pop culture-in your face prints. The key pieces for the coming icy months include cargo pants, the camp shirt and colour stories like fluoro brights and pristine whites. 

Royal blue suits and ultra groomed styles are also amongst the must haves for the coming winter season, as clean and tailored clothing was featured on numerous runways during the various fashion weeks in the past months. "it's 'OK to look catastrophically dressed" says Helena Bonham Carter

I love what this crazy bird had to say about her fashion style when she appeared on Jay Leno's TV talk show, the 44-year-old actress joked that losing at the Oscars makes people 'like you more'. She added, 'It's a bit like my dress sense - on the whole I get things deliberately wrong. I provide a service because people don't feel intimidated. Perfectionism is completely overrated. At least I make someone else go, 'Yay, it's OK to look catastrophically dressed'. Like the two shoe thing - that was indecision.'

So weather she has had an army of stylists and costume designers flapping around her, or she is just out for a stroll, we never miss out on her Helenaness. I think she's one of the coolest actresses that ever lived, and I love it! At the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Helena Bonham Carter wore one green shoe and one red shoe with her Vivienne Westwood metallic satin and tulle gown. A black net headdress and blacked out sunglasses with round frames topped the wacky look perfectly.

Tweed's collection titled "Yvonne", inspired by lingerie and the elegant movement of dance, was shown at 1on1 at Gateway in late 2010. The pieces were shown with a choreographed ballet, providing the audience with a different approach a conventional fashion show. Tweeds philosophy is that a single garment should be treated as a unique and artistic sculpture and a fashion show as installation art.

Cruel but pretty brilliant Print Ad Campaign - Save the Rhino

Here's a print ad campaign worthy of shooting your mouth off about. With all the disgusting recent news of Rhino poaching in South Africa, this print campaign brings a bit of comic relief to a tragic and disturbing subject. In my opinion, the only way the guys over at Stick could have improved on this concept, would have been to have the photographers shoot the horns strapped to some of the poachers already in custody. After the photo shoot, they could chased the poachers around in the bush, taking aim and shooting at them (without their cameras of course).

This print campaign is brand new, released this month and is by advertising and design agency, Stick.

Whilst trawling the internet for all things design, I have come across the work of this Cape Town Illustrator. Richard Moir enjoy's illustrating in various mediums, and is very influenced by Graffiti and other forms of lettering such as gang tattoos in South Africa. I really like this series of posters Titled "The South African Coast line".

The Noun Project: Free High-Quality Symbols

Symbols have been an integral part of our daily life for a long time. The language consists of symbols. Each symbol represents an object or concept, and symbols form the world’s visual communication in a simple way. Icons and pictograms are a dime a dozen out there, but usually they are expensive to license or are protected in other ways.

The Noun Project provides a huge collection of highly recognizable symbols, available for free download and use. The designers are committed to quality in what they do, and so the icons are indeed designed very well.

International Klein Blue

Yves Klein is a French artist most renowned for creating and patenting the infamous International Klein Blue (or IKB as it is known in art circles). IKB A glowing irridescent colour said to evoke something deep inside the viewer. Here is a small selection of his work:

Apparently the pure vibrance of it is actually impossible for computers and the printing press to register! So if you are in the area and feel like being moved by a contagious colour, you should visit the “Into the Void, Full Powers” exhibition which is on until Feb 13 2011. definitely check it out.

Klein is also well known for a photomontage, Saut dans le vide (Leap into the Void).

Bollywood Extravaganza at Moses Mabhida Stadium

The New Age Friendship Celebration Concert was held at Moses Mabhida Stadium after the cricket on Sunday to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the arrival of Indians in South Africa. It included Bollywood heavyweights Shahrukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra as the headline performers with a number of South African artists also featured, including Locnville, HHP, Liquideep, Drum Cafe and 1st Project. The likes of SRK were a huge hit with the predominantly Indian crowd and the show ended with a spectacular fireworks display which I’m sure woke most of Durban.

Need some inspiration for a New Year? Here's New Year challenge for you.
Whether it's in relationships, career, fashion sense, recording a photo a day for a whole year will leave you with a rich visual history of your life, & it will make you a better photographer to boot!

If you’re not into taking photos every day, no fear-there are other options; you could design something every day. Practice your skills. It doesn’t have to be a final, polished project, you can limit it to a short period of time. You could actually schedule this as part of your daily routine, which will make you more likely to follow through on your decision to design something daily.

It’s been done successfully by a lot of great designers. Here are some designers and groups that do it daily.

Why do it?

Here are just a few reasons why:
· Imagine being able to look back at any day of your year and recall what you did, who you met, what you learned… (Often we find it hard to remember what we did just yesterday or even last night, let alone a whole year ago!)
· Your year-long photo/design album will be an amazing way to document your travels and accomplishments, your haircuts and relationships.

Here's a tip, the aim is not to produce a masterpiece everyday. Some days your time is just too short. You don't have to own a Canon, or moleskin notebook, you can shoot your project on your phone, or keep your designs in a scrap book. It will be a lot easier to keep up the commitment, since your phone is always with you.

Your project doesn’t need to start on Jan 1, it’s any consecutive 365 days throughout the year, so what are you waiting for?

Tunnels and Alleyways:

Your Natural Studio

Learning to recognize light and how to use it is the constant task of a photographer. Whether naturally occurring light, or artificial strobes and flashes, light helps us capture the expressions of our subjects. As portrait photographers, it’s our job to make the light as flattering as we can.

For those who don’t have a 2,000 square-foot studio, you need not despair. I’m going to let you in on a little secret: you can get studio-type lighting elements in your natural-light images by shooting at the edges of tunnels or alleys.

How? They are cool structures, but more importantly, they provide three things that help achieve a

studio-like quality to your images:

1. Main Light is Directional.

Flat lighting is often not only boring, but also not the best way to show off your subject. In studio lighting, you will have a key light and a main light, and both have a direction to them. Some of the most flattering portraits show off cheekbones of our client or the angle of his/her chin. Putting your subject in an alley or tunnel creates a direction for the light, and giving a beautiful fall-off of light on the faces of your subject.

2. Distinct Catch Lights

The light in people’s eyes often stems from a small white dot somewhere on the eye, called a catch light. In a studio, it would be square from a soft box and round from umbrella. Naturally-created catch lights can occur from many things: sidewalks, buildings, windows and much more. When your subject is in the opening of an alley, you have narrowed the span of things reflecting light and have clear catch lights of the sky behind you. Here’s an advanced reason: when you expose for a subject in the opening of a tunnel or alley, they are darker than if they were standing out in the sun, and by contrast, the catch light will appear that much brighter — the exposure of the sky hasn’t changed.

3. Hair Light, Rim Light

Hair/Rim light is achieved by having a light come from the side or slightly behind the subject – not necessarily a light from directly behind the subject. Your subject is also brighter than the background, which visually separates them from the background. If your alley is long enough, you may see the light from the end of the tunnel or alleyway hitting the edge of their hair and body with the dark wall behind them. The rim light adds to the separation, making the subject stand out of the photo and grab attention.

Now that you can see the benefits of shooting in alleyways and tunnels, drive around and look for tunnels under bridges or closely-built buildings to try out these techniques.

Nick Knight's photography

I am completely awestruck by the artistic creative work of fashion photographer Nick Knight.

His fashion photography is pure art. The use of creative typography which accompanies many of his images really excites me. I feel very strongly that to often the different elements of design are separated into their own little boxes. Fashion design is seen as only Fashion design, Graphic design is seen on it's own as Graphic Design, and so on. Design is design. It's a series of elements that combined create a piece that is visually appealing and visually stimulating. Nick Knight's work is a perfect example of design incorporating many different elements.

Nick Knight is among the world’s most influential photographers as well as being Director & founder of SHOWstudio.com the fashion & art internet broadcasting channel. He has won numerous awards for his editorial work for Vogue, Dazed & Confused, W magazine, i-D, and Visionaire, as well as for fashion and advertising projects for clients including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Levi Strauss, Yohji Yamamoto and Yves Saint Laurent.
